Battlefield 3 VS Modern Warfare 3

There was a lot of buildup hype for both battlefield 3 and modern warfare 3. But which game is really worth the money and has better gameplay? For me, modern warfare 3 was the clear winner. More action, better gameplay and a general feeling that it is what a shooting game should be like. Not saying that battlefield 3 isn’t a nice game, but it does feel like it lacks something when compared to MW3.

Gamespot reports that US game sales are down 31% when compared to the same month last year, with Activision’s multi-platform Prototype the lead title for the month.
Believe it or not, things got worse in June. According to figures released by NPD this afternoon, overall US retail sales of non-PC game software, hardware, and accessories shrank by 31 percent to $1.17 billion, down from $1.7 billion the prior year. The results, the poorest monthly showing since a dramatic 41 percent drop-off in September 2000, were much worse than the 20 percent decline many gloomy analysts were expecting.

“The video games industry realized a significant decline when compared to June 2008, the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines,” said NPD analyst Anita Fraizer in a statement. “The first half of the year has been tough largely due to comparisons against a stellar first-half performance last year, but still, this level of decline is certainly going to cause some pain and reflection in the industry.”

Hardware was particularly hard hit, shrinking 38 percent from $617.25 million in June 2008 to just $382.2 million. The drop was somewhat paradoxical, as sales of the DS–boosted by the popular camera-equipped DSi, released in April–were still robust at 766,500 units. Its success, though, stands in contrast to virtually every other platform’s total, including the second-place Wii’s 361,700 units. In third was the Xbox 360 with 240,600 units–nearly 76,000 units ahead of bronze medal winner the PlayStation 3 and its 164,700 units. Sony’s other two platforms, the PSP and PlayStation 2, took home 163,500 and 152,700 units, respectively.

Valve has released a major update for Left 4 Dead which may or may not be in response to complaints regarding post-release support of the game. With this new patch players can now manage their campaign list to accommodate whole new campaigns sprawling multiple maps. Full SDK support has been implemented and mod makers can now create these full-sized campaigns, as well as have them fully supported for all game modes and lobby matchmaking. Valve even included a tutorial, “Dead Line,” to teach new mappers L4D level design.

No LAN Multiplayer in Blizzard Startcraft 2

Blizzard senior VP Rob Pardo has confirmed that the company’s upcoming RTS sequel StarCraft II will not feature LAN multiplayer support. The only multiplayer available will be on Battle.net.

IncGamers also got a clarification from Blizzard, shortly after the interview, saying the choice of excluding a LAN feature “is because of the planned technology to be incorporated into Battle.net,” a topic they will reveal more about at a later date.

The original StarCraft gained popularity largely because of the easy LAN mode, used on massive LANs like Dreamhack or small personal networks between friends, so this is a surprising move by Blizzard.

Personally, I’m really surprised by the news. What year are we already in, Mr Blizzard? Multiplayer LAN capability has always been an out-of-the-box feature and I can assure you that any game who dares goes into the market without it is just asking for failure.
