Play StationAmericans are worried about the economy and how it might affect them. But you know who isn’t worried? Sony isn’t. Not at all.

According to Jack Tretton, head of the company’s US PlayStation business, PS3 and PSP sales are well ahead of where Sony expected them to be at this time of year.

Tretton is confident of meeting the company’s targets as Sales are so far ahead of target. Sales of the PSP, a $170 handheld device that plays games, movies and can surf the Internet, are 20-30 percent ahead of plan and are well-placed to meet the Japanese company’s target of 15 million units sold.

“We are tracking at 100 percent up over last year,” he told Reuters. “… About 30 percent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number.

Also he added “I think people are going to question every dollar that they spend, but they are going to look for value in return, he said.”The entertainment value … with PlayStation 3 compares very favorably to other entertainment choices.”

Sony expects PS3 sales to hit ten million units, and PSP to shift 15 million, by the end of the business year in March 2009.
