This time a renowned Video Game developer, Richard Allen Garriott, the son of STS-9 U.S. astronaut Owen Garriott, embarked on the journey of a lifetime aboard the Russian Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft, which will take him to the International Space Station.
He has spent $30 million on this trip and has become the 6th tourist to travel into the space.
“I’m very happy for him,” said Garriott’s girlfriend, Kelly Miller, tears welling up in her eyes.
“It’s one of the things he always wanted to do… I feel like it’s well worth the opportunity.”
Among those watching the launch was the female South Korean cosmonaut Yi So-Yeon, who went into space for a mission in April.
She said she was “very moved.”
“I don’t know why, but I cried,” she told AFP.
“Now Richard has become a real cosmonaut.”
His trip will last for 10 days in space and Garriot is to be acoompanied by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Lonchakov and US astronaut Micheal Fincke.
