Despite coming late to the market, Blu-ray DVDs already outsell HD DVDs. This is, in no small part, due to 7 out of 8 major studios publishing on Blu-ray, and only 3 on HD DVD (with Universal being the only one to sign exclusively with HD DVD). The PS3′s Blu-ray player and HD 1080p video-out has been another major factor in the early success of the high definition disc format.
Many, however, are questioning Sony’s decision to not duplicate porn Blu-ray discs, and the restrictions it is placing on many of its third-party Blu-ray duplication facilities. Sony has not supported adult entertainment on earlier formats, including Beta, and some hypothesize that is why they have failed in the past. Though not a Sony product, many believe that restricting adult content was also the demise of Pioneer’s Laser-Disc format in the ’80s. It should be noted that there are methods of putting adult films on Blu-ray discs, but they are far more difficult that HD DVD, a reason behind many adult film companies choosing HD DVD as their next-gen format.
Time will tell if Sony’s ethics will sink the Blu-ray format, or if mainstream entertainment is powerful enough to help it succeed without adult films. Either way, this move ensures the viability of the HD DVD format, even if it becomes a place based around “mature” movies.
Back when print and video was the only way to get porn, NOT having it available on your format was a definite blow. The internet changes all that though.

Bad mistake Sony. When almost every aspect of the film industry supports you AND your competitor, you’re gonna need all the help you get!
Now that Blu-ray has lost support of the adult film industry, Microsoft is going to use that opportunity to GAIN their support with the HD-DVD format!
When Microsoft gains the sole support from the adult industry, they’re going to have an industry that generates over 60 BILLION dollars in profits each year on their side, which means Sony is going to be at a MASSIVE disadvantage!
And I thought they would have learned from losing all those exclusive game titles out there. Sheer idiocy.
grgspunk, i do agree with you that Sony will be losing out a lot for not aloowing blu-ray to join the adult movies market.
But, in terms of sales volumes, blu-ray is still leading the way. Where’s the magic?
I’m not suprised Blu-ray is surpassing HDDVD at the moment, considering the PS3 was recently released.
Both formats are still at their infancy since a majority of studios still use DVD as their standard format. It’s still too early to be completely sure regardless of who’s going to prevail at the moment because of this.
Considering how much of an impact the adult film industry had in the VHS vs Betamax war, I’d say Sony having to lose their support (again…) is going to be a major disadvantage for them in the long run. I should have specified the long run part.
