Sony Playstation 3 Expecting 10 Years of Lifespan

Sony has announced that its next generation video game console – Playstation 3 – will last for at least a decade. The company also said that they do not expect launch a successor to this gaming console for at least the next five years.

SCEA president Kaz Hirai said in a statement on their plans with the Sony Playstation 3 gaming console: “We look at our products having a 10 year life cycle, which we’ve proven with the PlayStation. Therefore, the PlayStation 3 is going to be a console that’s going to be with you again for 10 years.”

He further said: “We’re not going to ask the consumers to suddenly buy another PlayStation console in five years’ time and basically have their investment go by the wayside.”

Hirai clarified on a potential successor to this console: “I can’t speculate on when we might come out with a new console after PlayStation 3. But my message is that once you become a family in the PlayStation family of products, you become a family member.”

For once, I have to agree with that.

Yeh right… but within a few years (just when Microsoft announces Xbox 720… or whatever) there will be PlayStation 4. This kind of announcement is probably just to ‘make sure’ that parents feel safe to buy a new toy for the kids (so that there woudln’t need to buy new machine soon)

Yeah, basically you can say it’s a kind of marketing tactic just to make consumers more confident in the new machine.

Btw, it’s the sixth year now since Playstation 2 has come out into the market, and yet some people are still buying it just to play games. I’m sure that Playstation 3 wil be more attractive to consumers in the long term range. Let’s just cross our fingers for now to see whether the hardwares and features Playstation 3 will last the test of time for at least a decade.
