During a recent chat with a Japanese Site ITmedia, Xbox Corporate VP Peter Moore said that the Xbox 360 could get a Blu-Ray peripheral “if the need arises”!

While Microsoft is backing HD-DVD in the format war, Moore said that which side will win in the end is unknown. A worst case scenario would be something similar to the Beta versus VHS war of the 1980’s.

Given that the Xbox 360 can handle an external drive, it could take either an HD-DVD or a Blu-Ray drive (remember the HD-DVD drive is coming out later this year). However Moore said that the PS3, on the other hand, would be stuck with it’s internal Blu-Ray drive.

It’s unfair to say that though. Since the the PS3 has USB ports too, Sony could most easily choose to add an HD-DVD drive if it wanted.
